The World's Largest Synchronized Swimming Event
is Next Month in Gainesville
GAINESVILLE, FL – The Gainesville Sports Commission will - for the third time - host the world's largest synchronized swimming event for
US Synchronized Swimming the Esynchro Age Group Championships held June 27th – July 4th, 2009 in the Stephen C. O'Connell Natatorium on the
campus of the University of Florida.
The eight day event will have over 1,200 girls participate from across the nation. The competition will feature team, duet, trio, and solo in
age groups ranging from 11 – 18. Alachua County will be impacted by over $1 million dollars in visitor spending and about 5,000 room nights throughout the week.
The local synchronized swimming club, the Gainesville Gaviatas, will not only be competing in this event, but will serve as the co-hosts with the
Gainesville Sports Commission.
This event is highly competitive with many Olympic hopefuls and nationally ranked athletes participating. When the US Women's Synchronized Swimming team
performed for the world in Beijing this past year it is hard to believe that Gainesville, FL has been a stop in three of the ten athletes' journey to the Olympics.
The three athletes Christina Jones, Meghan Kinney, and Annabelle Orme, have competed in the Esynchro Age Group Championships during the past two times it was
held in Gainesville.
The Gainesville Sports Commission is honored to be hosting the US Synchronized Swimming Age Group Championships. Please call 352-338-9300 for more information
on how you can watch Olympic hopefuls compete in the Stephen C. O'Connell Center pool.

Gainesville Sports Commission Wins Two Awards at the National Association of Sports Commissions' 2009 Sports Event Symposium
The Gainesville Sports Commission (GSC) was recognized with two national awards during the National Association of Sports Commissions'
2009 Sports Event Symposium in Denver, CO on April 27th – 29th, 2009. The first was the "Outstanding Communications/Advertising"
Award and was accepted by GSC's Communications Manager, Joleen Cacciatore. The second was the "Member of the Year" Award and was accepted by
the GSC's past-president Richard Blalock. Both awards were given in the category of small to mid-markets.
The 2009 National Association of Sports Commissions (NASC) Member Awards Program is designed to recognize the achievements of NASC Active category members
based on their successes in the calendar year 2008.
The "Outstanding Communications/Advertising" award is given to an Active member with the most outstanding advertisement/communication.
This included either a stand-alone advertisement or any other type of communication piece. The "Member of the Year" award is given to an Active member who,
in the opinion of the judges, has had the most outstanding impact on their local community through sporting events, community events and/or economic impact.
Jack Hughes, the GSC Executive Director said, "We are very pleased with this recognition, but know we couldn't accomplish what we do without the help
we receive from VisitGainesville and our many sports partners here."
The Gainesville Sports Commission is the official sports event marketing arm for Alachua County. They are responsible for a "bid pool" fund each year,
enabling them to pay bid fees and other costs related to bringing sports events into Alachua County. The bid pool is managed through a contract with the
Alachua County's Visitor and Convention Bureau to promote tourism through sports. The GSC hosts or helps others host more than 35 events each year with
an annual economic impact of about $12 million. These events bring more than 30,000 room nights and 48,000 visitors to the community each year.
